History of Cedar Park

Cedar Park was originally a community by the name of Bruggerhoff which was hard to pronounce, hard to spell, and generally disliked. In 1887 Mr. Emmett Cluck, the son of George and Harriet, changed the name of the town to Cedar Park. Locals liked the name much better and it was accepted by postal officials. A park was constructed in 1892 that was approximately a half acre. The park was fully landscaped with trees, shrubs, flowers, grass and benches. Interesting colored pebbles were used in the raised flower beds. Austinites would ride the train to Cedar Park and stroll around the grounds. Cedar Park became one of Austin's first Country Clubs and a popular destination. The growth of Cedar Park was spurred by the growth of nearby Austin. In 1970, the population of Cedar Park was 125 residents and had 24 businesses & two churches. On February 24, 1973 the citizens of Cedar Park voted to incorporate and in 1978 citizens of Leander incorporated.  In 1990 the population of Cedar Park grew to 5,000 residents and then rapidly reached 26,000 residents in the year 2000. Cedar Park is now one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation.
