April 29, 1881 the Austin and Northwest Railroad company was incorporated. A charter for a narrow gage railroad was established for purposes of connecting Austin, Texas to Burnet, Texas. When the line was completed in 1882, the Austin to Burnet Railroad Company insisted the community name be changed to Bruggerhoff in honor of one of their officials. The line approached the town of Bagdad which was a thriving town with numerous businesses, but the merchants refused to let the railroad pass through their town. The railroad purchased land a mile east of Bagdad and surveyed it. When the track was finished in 1884 they had a barbecue. At the BBQ the railroad officials requested the town be named Leander after the railroad official Leander “Catfish” Brown. Within a few years most of the merchants and residents relocated closer to the rail line and left the town of Bagdad. 1978 citizens of Leander incorporated. By 2000, Leander's population reached 7,596. since then Leander's current population has grown to around 15,000. The growth continues and is a very popular location for families as well as retirees.
